Management of residential energy is hot topic at the Consumer Electronics Show

If ever there was a deal with the need to highlight the world of electronics is energy. At the Consumer Electronics Show this week, companies from various parts of the industry will be exhibiting equipment and services hoping to make the management of residential energy more attractive. The idea is that by offering consumers and small businesses detailed instructions and tools for easy use, companies can reduce energy consumption in the order of 10% to 20%.

Among the companies that are introducing energy management systems are residential Whirlpool and energy retailer Direct Energy, which will test a system console with touch screen, the OpenPeak, and installation services for Geek Squad at Best Buy. There will also be some displays of residential energy management, dedicated to using the home network to give people a real-time view of how much electricity they are consuming, along with options to reduce their bills. Consumers also can access data on energy sites such as Google and the PowerMeter Hohm Microsoft, if the house has a smart meter or monitor power.

The distributors have implemented energy efficiency programs for years, but these energy management systems are more residential friendly to the consumer. According to David Dollihite, vice president of product development at Direct Energy, "Energy is a matter of little interest. Has low priority in the lifestyle of people, even as the values in the cash economy (energy efficiency). One way to put energy management at home is that involve systems or entertainment services. The media company Control4 home, for example, make the show a screen to view and control the lighting and climate, but also to access music, videos and online services such as weather information. The AlertMe and Electronic Housekeeper also present energy systems in multi-functional displays.
