The targets set by the European Council to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), increasing energy efficiency, renewable energy industries and expansion of the interconnection of energy systems require a new model for distribution networks. The intelligent network technologies (smart grid) are one response to this challenge, as evidenced by papers presented at the world's leading event power distribution, the 20th edition of Cired International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution, held from 8 to 11 June in Prague, Czech Republic.
A report published in the August issue of the journal Modern Electric explains the structure of the event and discusses the presentation of intelligent networks. According to the report, the smart grid theme was the subject of more than 30 technical papers in Cired 2009, and has received broad highlighted by exhibiting companies such as ABB, GE, Siemens, Schneider Electric and others. The magazine also brings in its report the case presented by the Brazilian engineer Jorge Alberto Bernardo, director of marketing Efacec Automation. The engineer presented the characteristics of InovGrid, a project currently being implemented in Energias de Portugal (EDP), which brings together a consortium of companies with a mission to create an innovative model of interaction between the network and consumers. For actors in the electricity sector, the InovGrid appears to be advantageous to promote market liberalization and promote standards of quality and reliability of energy supplies, with direct impact on reducing costs and losses.
